1. Executive Strategy Retreat (Oil Field Services)

Planned and facilitated a two-day strategy session for an oil field services provider. Worked with leaders of each subsidiary in advance of the retreat to ensure key issues were on agenda. Kept retreat focused, on track, and produced a five-year strategy and operating plan. (McKinsey & Company)

2. US Utility Entry Strategy

Recommended a US entry strategy for a European utility by valuing a potential M&A opportunity. Analyzed the US utility market to identify high potential candidates. Screened candidate list by potential merger synergies with the acquirer. Modeled expected value from achieved synergies to help acquirer decide on a purchase price. (McKinsey & Company)

3. Utility Strategy for Deregulation

Developed a five-year strategy for a utility in the wake of industry deregulation in Texas. Analyzed potential profits and the client's skills in the electricity value chain (generation, distribution, retail). Recommended areas of focus and helped management communicate strategy to the utility board. (McKinsey & Company)

4. US Natural Gas Pipeline Utilization

Developed an Excel-based software application that forecasts the flow of natural gas through the US pipeline system based on changes in industry dynamics. Collected and analyzed data on US demand, supply, prices, capacity, and producers. Used linear optimization to model effects of changes in capacity to help pipeline companies decide where and when to build new pipeline. (McKinsey & Company)

5. Deregulated Electricity Customer Switching

Helped a retail client manage the chaos caused by the deregulation of the electricity retail market in Texas by analyzing data on switch requests submitted between retailers and a state regulatory agency. Raised awareness with the regulator of unresolved switch requests, estimated revenue impact for back billing and reconciliation purposes, and most importantly, identified the bottlenecks, and set up a process to workaround the bottlenecks preventing future switching delays or mistakes. 6. Purchasing Process Redesign (Power Generation)

Led purchasing group of an electricity provider to implement a new sourcing
process for electricity turbines designed to increase sourcing options, deepen vendor relationships, and reduce total costs of ownership. Leveraged the combined purchasing power for the company's more than 40 electricity generation facilities around the US to drastically improve negotiating position with potential vendors. Managed post-merger integration of two natural gas trading companies. Identified merger synergies through a bottoms-up client team brainstorming process. Rigorously evaluated potential opportunities through feasibility and profitability screens based on expected payback of required investment. Recommended and planned a comprehensive cost-reduction initiative for the US exploration and development operations of an integrated international oil and gas producer based on results from publicly available operating benchmarks and overall evaluation of the industry and competitive dynamics. 9. New Business Unit Structure and Roles (Natural Gas Liquids)

Designed a new organizational structure to support a natural gas liquids business unit's implementation of a new strategy based on origination and trading. Defined required functions and processes, identified skill gaps, and developed a near-term resourcing plan. Used a military-style, table-top exercise with the business unit's leaders to play out roles in varying processes to identify whether a decentralized or centralized structure would work best.
