Nonprofit ProjectsNonprofit Strategy
Collaborated with the National Parks Service (NPS) and the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) to create the first ever business plans for the nation’s crown jewels. Calculated historical spending enabling Park supervisors to estimate required funding for all programs. Aggregated the results allowing the NPCA to advocate for additional federal funding for the NPS. 2. Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership Roundtable Successfully directed the Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership (FRFTP)—a roundtable comprised of nearly 30 organizations including state & federal agencies, local governments, environmental conservation organizations, academic & scientific institutes, and industry & user groups. Together—disparate voices and economic desires—they developed a long-term vision and roadmap for achieving comprehensive fire-risk mitigation and ecological restoration within Front Range forests. Beh Management Consulting’s report on this project can be viewed at www.frftp.org/roundtable/report.pdf. 3. Colorado Ranchland Economics Led a team of researchers to collect and analyze historical ranchland sales data from most of Colorado county assessors’ offices. Used this wealth of data to isolate examples of ranchlands that sold more than once in order to estimate the average annual appreciation rate by county of vacant ranchland. Conducted a series of interviews with leading ranchland brokers in Colorado and Wyoming to learn about the factors that contribute to or detract from ranchland values and appreciation rates. The results of this project inform The Nature Conservancy’s private land protection strategies. Helped create a database of investment activity in the Amazon Basin for a foundation with nearly six billion dollars in assets and a grant-making budget of over $200 million per year. Guided this foundation’s development of its Amazon Basin grant-making strategy by providing critical information on what type of humanitarian and environmental projects were already funded so that gaps and opportunities for high-impact investing could be identified. 5. Small Diameter Timber Utilization Identified over two-dozen commercial products that can be made from small diameter timber (SDT) and analyzed the bioenergy industries—biopower, bioheating, and fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel—to know which technologies were sufficiently developed to be cost-competitive with traditional fuels. Concluded that bioheating (burning SDT chips in boilers to heat water then pumped through a building’s heating system) is the highest short-term use of SDT and selling SDT to bioheating consumers would subsidize the cost of forest treatments by as much as 40%. The Nature Conservancy’s need for fire treatments could be significantly subsidized by the sale of the yielded matter from forest treatments. Beh Management Consulting’s original research and conclusions can be viewed at www.frftp.org/roundtable/report.pdf. Nonprofit Operations6. Guest lodge operations and accounting Worked with a nonprofit environmental conservation organization to operate their private guest lodge on ranchland adjacent to a National Park in the most cost effective manner without compromising the mission-related uses of the facility. Untangled the data in the centralized accounting system to understand the economics and potential profitability of the facility. Presented several performance improving scenarios. Implemented a process whereby the facility’s economic performance could be easily analyzed on a regular basis, keeping decision-makers in touch with the regular operations and needs of the facility. Nonprofit Organization7. Workplan Training for Staff Retreat Developed and led an interactive training session for the entire staff of a 50-person office. The training focused on creating and using work plans in a team setting. Groups practiced creating work plans for real-life situations, such as planning a wedding, building a second home, planning a vacation, and other topics. 8. Project Management Training for New Project Directors Led a client team in developing a full-day training session for project directors charged with working on their own in the field to achieve conservation of private properties. Helped define the project management process and developed tools to help these project directors track progress and milestones. 9. Coaching for Team Effectiveness Designed and implemented a new team management process for an environmental conservation organization. Coached team leaders and members on roles, tools, and processes. 10. Knowledge Management Systems, Culture and Processes Designed organizational roadmap for transforming an organization with 3,500 staff from a transaction-based culture into a knowledge-based culture. Recommended knowledge management systems and processes. Identified opportunities to leverage external resources and partners. Coached new executive in cross-functional team management of geographically dispersed working teams. |
